HHYD Afterschool Program Yields Results

Community Priorities — April 2021

$8,000 grant to Hospitality House Youth Development (HHYD) for the Urban Learning Center

HHYD Development Officer Walter Cox writes,

“The 2020–2021 ULC Afterschool program served 66 participants. Our service levels during Summer Spot 2021 increased to 105 as state restrictions were reduced, vaccines became available, and the public’s confidence in resuming normal activities increased.

The 2020–2021 ULC Afterschool test results revealed a 25% average improvement in reading and a 29% improvement in math. This is quite an accomplishment given all of the year’s challenges. Summer Spot 2021 testing and analysis for 2020–2021 Summer Spot participants show that based on pre and post tests, overall combined reading and math scores improved by 8%. Another positive note, 80% of our teachers surveyed reported an improvement in student behavior over the summer. These improvements significantly increase their chances of graduating on time, pursuing a successful career, and positively impacting those around them.

We are so appreciative of the investment you have made in our community! Your continued support provides immeasurable hope, skills and expanding futures for North Minneapolis children, youth and families.”
