Community Priorities Grant Application

As you know all too well, the Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted older adults. Most obviously, the risk of illness has forced many older adults to limit or eliminate social interaction with friends and family. In addition, restrictions and essential worker shortages have disrupted their support systems and routines. Many have also struggled to take advantage of changes initiated by the pandemic (e.g., online shopping, home delivery, virtual meetings, etc.) due to lack of technology access and/or training. Finally, seniors bear the emotional toll of losing friends and family while in a heightened state of isolation. Although vaccines bring hope of a return to normalcy, a return to normal may not be enough. An AARP study conducted prior to the pandemic found that approximately 1 in 3 older adults over the age of 45 reported being lonely; additional research indicates that social isolation can have a profound impact on one’s overall health. In short, connection and support must become the “new normal” for older adults.

Every third year the Catholic Community Foundation of Minnesota solicits grant applications to support older adults. This year we’re shifting our focus to address the social isolation and loneliness experienced by this population.
